Psalm 41:1: “Blessed is he who considers the poor; the Lord will deliver him in time of trouble.”

First Lutheran is an urban church, located in the heart of downtown Lorain. There are people who often come into the church looking for help, such as needing food, gas money, prescriptions, or other assistance. Since we are located in the heart of an area with economic struggles, we have many opportunities to serve those in need.

On the second Thursday of each month, volunteers from First Lutheran host a food pantry at which people can select groceries that they need. Hundreds of people are fed each month through this program, sponsored by the Lorain Cooperative Ministry.

The “Co-op” is an ecumenical ministry which distributes food to the needy from eight churches throughout Lorain County. First Lutheran is a founding member of the Co-op, which was started in 1984.

If you have questions about our pantry or are interested in volunteering, you can reach out!

The donations to  our Front Door Ministry provide financial aid to assist with the purchase of gasoline, birth certificates, bus tickets, and driver’s licenses. Procedures for these are in place and include referrals to existing community agencies and programs. Funding comes from donations from other churches and agencies.

In 2023, our Front Door Ministry received monies from the 100 Women Program. This donation has led to an increase in giving from other programs after hearing of our need.

Also, Community Congregational Church earmarked part of their endowment funds to cover all of our birth certificates and driver’s licenses. There is a separate checking account for Front Door, administered by Lorain Cooperative ministry.

Both the food pantry and Front Door are open every Tuesday from 9:30am- 11:30am.

There is an additional food pantry on the 2nd Thursday of the month at the same time.

LEAF (Love Emergency Aid Fund) was created in 1982 to meet that need.

Funds come from extra donations by First Lutheran members and from the other downtown churches. People in need meet with a staff member or volunteer, who evaluates their need and provides appropriate assistance.

Records are kept to ensure that help goes to those who are truly in need.

First Lutheran is widely known in the local community as a place to go for help. Staff and volunteers have formed many meaningful, personal relationships with local neighbors as a result of this program.
